The benefits of insulating your loft
Energy saving and roof insulation
A quarter of the heat loss from homes occurs through roofs in uninsulated attics. Installing insulation in your attic or attic is a great way to save energy and prevent heat loss. While many see insulation as an unwanted additional cost to their roof or home project, it will pay for itself many times over in energy savings over its lifetime.
If you replace more than 25% of the roof, the insulation must be installed and meet the minimum energy performance level to meet current building codes.
Properly insulating your attic has many benefits, including:
Reduce your heating costs
Improve your home's energy efficiency and carbon footprint
It keeps your house warm in the winter months and cooler in the summer months
Help reduce condensation problems in your home
Types of insulation for your roof
Open Attic - In attics that have not been converted for home use, laminated coil insulation is usually installed between the ceiling joists.
We tend to use ground wool insulation made from recycled glass bottles, sand, and other materials. It is non-hygroscopic (practically does not absorb and retain moisture from the ambient air), is non-flammable (does not burn), and does not rot or attract pests.
Earthwool Insulation uses advanced bio-based "bonding" technology instead of traditional petro-based chemicals such as phenol, formaldehyde, and acrylic.
Converted Loft – With an attic that has been converted into a residence (e.g. a bedroom, office, etc.), you want to keep the area warm; therefore, it is impractical to isolate the floor area. Instead, grooved insulation panels are installed between the roof joists, cut to size, and fixed between the joists to prevent wind and heat loss.
Flat Roofs – For areas with flat roofs, a “warm roof” is usually installed which consists of installing insulation panels under the waterproofing membrane and on top of the structural roof to create a warm roof; This occurs when the roof is built or when the roof covering is renewed. Cool flat roofs are generally avoided due to the need to install proper ventilation, which can be problematic and expensive.
Attic Storage - If you want the attic to be used for storage then the storage platform must be built on top of the insulation as regulations state that boards should not be placed directly on top of the insulation as this will lose the U-value. The storage platform is made by building a wooden structure elevated above the insulation
